Rome is a city where ancient history meets modern life, offering an unforgettable experience. From historical landmarks to vibrant neighborhoods, there’s something for every traveler. Ready to explore? Let’s dive into the top 14 must-see attractions in Rome.
1. Colosseum
The Colosseum stands as a symbol of Rome’s grandeur. This ancient amphitheater once hosted gladiator contests and public spectacles. For the best experience, take the subway to the “Colosseo” stop and arrive early to avoid crowds. Book your tour in advance to enter into and explore inside the colosseum.
2. The Trevi Fountain
My personal favorite site in Rome, the Trevi Fountain, is named after its location at the intersection of three streets: tre-three and vie-ways.
To beat the crowds, visit early in the morning. Be cautious of pickpockets in the area and those offering to take a photo for you. They generally expect money for the “favor”.
3. The Pantheon
As one of the best-preserved ancient buildings, the Pantheon has served as a temple and church for nearly 2,000 years. Its dome, with an oculus, is a marvel of architecture. Remember to dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees—as it functions as an active church.
4. Spanish Steps and Fontana della Barcaccia
At the end of Via dei Condotti, you’ll find the Spanish Steps and Fontana della Barcaccia. Designed by Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the fountain’s boat-inspired design reflects historical flooding. Note: Sitting on the Spanish Steps is prohibited and can result in fines.
5. The Roman Forum
Explore the heart of ancient Rome at the Roman Forum. Once a bustling marketplace, the Forum now offers a glimpse into Roman life. Purchase tickets in advance to wander through these historic ruins.
6. Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica
Vatican City, an independent state within Rome, is home to remarkable art and architecture. The Vatican Museum features masterpieces like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Buy tickets early to avoid long lines. Don’t miss St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest churches globally, though be prepared for long queues.
7. Eat as the Romans Eat
Indulge in traditional Roman dishes like pasta carbonara, made with guanciale, black pepper, pecorino cheese, and egg yolks. Try alternatives such as Cacio e Pepe, which doesn’t have the raw egg, or Amatriciana, if you prefer tomato sauce. Don’t forget to sample Pizza Romana, known for its thin, crispy crust, or Pinsa, a healthier flatbread pizza.
One of my favorite quick service pasta places in Rome is EGG Pasta, near the Vatican. We make a stop every time we come to Rome.
8. Visit Trastevere
Every trip to Rome, I make a stop in Trastevere for aperativo (like Italian Happy Hour) or dinner. Trastevere is a charming neighborhood filled with bars, restaurants, and shops. The area’s vibrant atmosphere is perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. or later for dinner.
*FYI aperativo is typically from 6:00-8:00pm and Italians like to eat dinner after 8:00pm. Some dinner restaurants do not open until 7or 8pm in the evening.
9. Galleria Borghese
Located in a historic villa, the Galleria Borghese is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It boasts the largest collection of Caravaggio’s works and offers a fascinating glimpse into art history. I highly recommend taking a prearranged tour. Not only can they point out the main attractions to see, but our guide shared interesting background information on the artists and small details in the pieces that I would have otherwise missed.
10. Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona is a lively square featuring the impressive Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It’s an ideal spot for photos, a café visit, or simply soaking up Rome’s vibrant atmosphere.
11. Discover Ancient Catacombs
Explore the Catacombs of Rome, an extensive network of ancient burial sites. Visit sites like the Catacombs of San Callisto, San Sebastiano, and Domitilla to learn about early Christian burial practices and see ancient frescoes and inscriptions.
12. The Mouth of Truth
Located at the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Mouth of Truth is a marble disc with a legendary past. According to myth, it would bite off the hand of liars. It’s a fun and historic photo opportunity.
*The Mouth of Truth was also famously featured in an iconic scene from Audrey Hepburn’s Roman Holiday.
13. The Capitoline Museums
The Capitoline Museums, the world’s oldest public museums, house classical sculptures, ancient artifacts, and Renaissance paintings. Don’t miss the statue of Marcus Aurelius and enjoy exploring these historic collections.
14. Shop in Rome
For luxury brands, visit Via Condotti. For unique items, explore Campo de’ Fiori and Trastevere. Look for artisanal goods, Italian leather products, and gourmet foods like truffle products and local wines.
Rome’s rich history and vibrant culture offer endless exploration opportunities. Enjoy your adventure in the Eternal City!
