Tagallalang Rice Terraces Bali

Best Things to Do in Bali

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local life, Bali has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the top things to do on this beautiful island, including my personal recommendations from our recent trip.

Balinese Cuisine

Truly a local favorite, Nasi Goreng, is a delicious fried rice dish often served with a fried egg. Don’t miss Sate, skewered and grilled meat marinated in spices and accompanied by peanut sauce. For the adventurous, try Kopi Luwak, also known as “poop coffee.” This unique brew is made using beans digested and excreted by the civet cat. The result is a smooth, rich flavor that coffee enthusiasts rave about. Make sure to search out coffee shops around Bali offer tastings of this famous coffee, and other locally produced teas and coffees.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces, located just north of Ubud, are breathtaking and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These iconic rice paddies showcase the traditional subak irrigation system. You can take a leisurely walk through the terraces admiring the lush greenery or for an unforgettable photo op, try the famous swing that hangs over the rice fields. You can even rent flowing dresses for your photos. I did this and the photos are one of my favorite souvenirs from the trip.

Explore Nearby Islands

If you’re looking to venture beyond Bali, take day trips to nearby islands like Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. These islands have stunning beaches and dramatic landscapes. We visited Nusa Penida in May with a one-day guide and although the island was beautiful, it was so overrun with tourists that we didn’t really enjoy the excursion.

Experience Ubud

Ubud is often regarded as the cultural heart of Bali. While you can explore local shops and art markets, be cautious. Prices can be inflated due to the influx of tourists. For unique and affordable finds, head to the Bali Handy factory store in Ubud. Although it’s a bit of a drive from the city center, you’ll discover a huge selection of handmade basket bags. These bags come at much better prices than what you’d find in touristy markets.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Bali is home to several monkey forests, but the most famous one is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud. This sanctuary is well-known for its large population of long-tailed macaques and beautiful jungle setting, as well as its temples and cultural significance. Remember to keep an eye on your belongings. The monkeys can be quite mischievous!

Discover Bali’s Waterfalls

Bali is home to numerous stunning waterfalls, with Banyumala Waterfall being a hidden gem that we visited. Nestled in the lush jungle, finally we could escape the congestion of Ubud with this picturesque waterfall. The trek to Banyumala is an adventure in itself but upon arrival we quickly cooled down with a swim.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

As you plan your Bali adventure, keep in mind a few essential tips. The markets in Ubud have become quite overpriced due to increased tourism when compared with shops just outside of Ubud. Consider hiring a driver to navigate the chaotic traffic. A short 30-minute drive could easily turn into a two-hour journey during peak times. While renting a scooter is an option, only do so if you’re a confident and defensive driver.

Conclusion

We loved Bali but I also recommend visiting other nearby Islands when you visit Indonesia. For example, a short flight from Bali we were able to experience the once in a lifetime Komodo National Park. With less tourists and congestion, we enjoyed the beaches and snorkeling much more than Bali. Checkout my other post on seeing Komodo Dragons in the wild at the Komodo National Park.
